VKG processed 707,680 tonnes of shale oil in the first half of 2005

The oil factory of VKG Oil AS, a subsidiary of Viru Keemia Grupp AS (VKG), produced 90,000 tonnes of oils for marketing, approximately 20,000 tonnes of electrode coke and coke products. In addition, 286 tonnes of phenol fractions and 40,000 tce of producer gas were produced.

Of the realised net turnover of VKG Oil AS in the first half of 2005, oils made up 72%, electrode coke and coke products 15%, producer gas 7%, and phenol fractions 2%.
In the first half-year, 72% of the products were exported, which is comparable to the relevant amount in 2004. More than half of what was produced was sold in Baltic Sea ports; electrode coke was exported mostly to Russia and Ukraine. The company exports its products to a total of nine foreign countries.

In 2004, the plant processed as much as 1,396,000 tonnes of oil shale. The output of ready-to-use products for the year was divided as follows: oils for marketing 177,000 tonnes; electrode coke and coke products 37,000 tonnes; phenol fractions 219,000 tonnes; producer gas 79,000 tce. Of the realised net turnover, oils made up 75%, electrode coke and coke products 15%, producer gas 7%, and phenol fractions 0.7%.

The main strategic market of VKG Oil AS is Western Europe where currently over 70% of what is produced is sold. The European Union’s recognition of all oil shale chemicals produced by VKG can be considered as an important breakthrough in 2004. Their entry in the EU list of new products and designation with ELINCS registry numbers provides a legal framework for the marketing of Estonian oil shale products on EU territory.

VKG Oil AS is the largest oil shale producer in Estonia and a leading shale oil producer in the world. The company employs 390 people.
