A new level in plastic waste recycling
We shall give a new life to plastic that has until now been burnt or deposited
Approximately 100,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in Estonia every year. Only a quarter of that ends up back in circulation. The rest of the plastic is burnt at the Iru Power Plant or deposited in landfills.
Our aim is to make the recycling of plastic waste considerably more effective and give each plastic product several lives.
For this purpose, we shall apply a chemical recycling technology that has not been previously applied in Estonia. The plant to be established in Kohtla-Järve will consist of two parts: a plastic waste sorting and preprocessing plant which produces plastic granules, and a pyrolysis plant which produces pyrolysis oil. Pyrolysis oil is a valuable raw material for the chemical industry and other plastic produces – it can be used for producing new plastic products, thus reducing the use of fossil resources.
-
40%
We shall increase the recycling of plastic waste from the former 25 percent to nearly 40 percent.
-
26 000
We shall reduce the greenhouse gas emission from the production of plastic by approximately a third, preventing the generation of over 26,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
-
13 000
We shall produce 13,000 tonnes of pyrolysis oil which will replace fossil fuels in the production of plastic.
-
60
We shall create about 60 well-paid jobs in Ida-Viru County and offer various additional possibilities for the creation of jobs in the value chains that service production.
The possibilities of use of the pyrolysis oil to be produced are limitless
The pyrolysis oil produced from plastic waste can be used in nearly all the areas:
- New plastic packaging and products: dishes, drink bottles and other commodities.
- Building materials: plastic composite materials used in construction, e.g. floor covering materials.
- Automotive industry: interior and exterior plastic components of cars.
- Electronics industry: casing materials and other plastic parts of electronic products.
- Textile industry: textiles and fibres used in clothes and other textile products.
- Furniture: garden furniture, office furniture and other furniture items made of plastic.
