VKG launches equipment to burn generator gas and oil shale together

OÜ VKG Energia, a subsidiary to Viru Keemia Grupp AS (VKG), will launch a uniquely constructed boiler at the thermal power station in Kohtla-Järve on 21 April, which allows for producing heat energy from generator gas alongside oil shale.

“Heat energy production will become more environment-friendly, since air emissions will be reduced. It will also be more cost efficient, since using the available generator gas reduces the oil shale consumption of heat energy production, while oil shale can be much more economically used for producing oil and chemicals compared to just burning it in a boiler”, explained Mr. Janek Parkman, the Chairman of the Management Board of VKG.

Reconstruction of the 5th boiler plant for burning both oil shale and generator gas began in the winter of 2004 and was completed this spring. The cost of the works was EEK 4.5 million. Preparations are being made for reconstructing two more boilers (6th and 8th), putting the valuable experience from the first reconstruction into use. About EEK 6.8 million will be invested in the reconstruction of the two boilers. All three boilers will be run at full power in the autumn of 2005.

OÜ VKG Energia is a subsidiary to VKG, producing and selling heat and electric energy. The total thermal capacity of the Kohtla-Järve thermal power station owned by the company is over 500 MW. The station supplies heat energy to the industrial consumers of the area and the inhabitants of the Järve district of Kohtla-Järve and the Kohtla rural municipality. The company employs 100 people.
