In Ukraine, the German company Thyssen Krupp has finalised a geological model of the Boltyshki deposit field and the planning of an oil shale opencast mine with efficiency of 5 mln tons per year, according to the VKG license. As a result of this work, the cost of an opencast mine opening, time scheduling and the production cost of oil shale mining have been defined. The information obtained is an important part of the assessment of the profitability of the oil shale processing complex.

There was no new activity undertaken in Ukraine in 2009 due to the drastic change in economic circumstances, research work on potential of Aleksinaci oil shale deposit in Serbia has been halted and all activities related to the Slantsy deposit have also been virtually stopped.
